DON Report Back to What's New

CareWatch® - (July, 2008)

Excellent quality of care for your residents isn't the only goal we have here at eHDS--we also strive to make your jobs easier and more efficient.  The newly released DON Report does just that by providing you with a report which is an overview of census and clinical information such as resident details, QI/QM information, and occurrence information pulled from both CareWatch® as well as RiskWatch® and presented in one cohesive unit.

This eliminates the need for you to manually retrieve this information from several different sources; hence it saves you time, provides a quick and easy way to compare metrics, and improves your overall efficiency.

The new report can be viewed by CareWatch® users who have Management permissions and/or by RiskWatch® users who have DON permissions in the system.   It can be generated for the organization, region, or facility levels.  At the region and organization levels, the report is a summary of the information included at the facility level.

The census and clinical information used in the DON Report is pulled from CareWatch® and is taken from the most current MDS assessment, discharge, or re-entry assessment submitted on or before the last day of the reporting period.

Similarly, the occurrence information is pulled directly from RiskWatch® and includes those occurrences where the date and time of the occurrence is also recorded on or before the last day of the selected reporting period.  Note that only occurrences which have a status of "Pending," "Complete," or "Closed" from the Report Entry phase of RiskWatch® are used for this report.

The DON Report is found on the OPERATIONS menu in CareWatch®.

To see it, log in to CareWatch® and click the OPERATIONS link found in the gold navigation menu to  the left of the screen:

Please Note:  You must be at the facility level in the blue banner at the top of the screen to successfully access this page.

Once the Operations menu is open, click on the underlined link titled, "DON Report" found under the heading, "Use Analysis."

This will open a page where you can select the specific parameters for your report such as the reporting period, organization level, and the option to display a list of residents by name that are included in the census data for the time period selected (the resident list is only available at the facility level).

As shown to the right, there are four steps required to set up the DON report:

1.  Select the reporting period by clicking on the down arrow in the drop down box next to "Report Date Range."  Options include:  months, quarters, or years.

It is important to remember here that the data pulled for the report includes only assessments and occurrences which have been submitted on or after the start date and on or before the end date of the reporting period you selected.

2.  Select the organization level for which you want to run the report.  These options include:  organization-wide, by region, or by facility and depend on the permissions you have in the system--you may not be able to see organization or region information if you don't have the appropriate permissions in the system.  Also, note that at the region or organization level, the report is a summary of the information from the facility level report.

3.  For a facility level DON Report, decide if you want to include resident details in the report.  If yes, click the "Display Details" checkbox to see a list by name of the residents in the census for your selected time frame.  If not, leave the "Display Details" checkbox blank.  A detailed resident list is not available on the summary reports (region or organization levels).

4.  Click the gray "Submit" button at the bottom of the page to generate the report.  The report will open in a new window using the parameters that you just selected.  If you want to go back to the default settings for this page, click the gray "Reset" button.

An example of the DON Report at the facility level without the resident details displayed is shown below:

When you click "Display Details" on the DON Select page, the facility level report looks like the following.  Please note that the snapshot shown below is an abbreviated picture of the report, all of the information as shown above is still included with the resident census list version although it is not shown here.

The report itself consists of five different sections, some of which have subsets of more detailed data within them.  These are:

Census Information
Clinical Information
  • Sentinel Events
QI / QM Information
  • Continence
  • Nutrition and Hydration
  • Psychotropic Medications
  • Restraints
Occurrence Reporting
  • Incidents (not Falls) that Resulted in:
  • Falls that Resulted in:
  • Medication Errors
  • Skin Tears
  • Ulcers
  • Number of Occurrences Reported to the State
Specific details regarding each of the fields on the DON report, including calculation methods used, is given in the Help text for the report.  It's important to note that the Help for the DON Report is not found on the gold navigation menu under the link, "Help This Page."

Because this report opens as a pop-up, the link to the Help text has been included on the page itself.  To access Help, click the square blue button with the question mark in the middle of it which is located at the top right of the screen.  This will open a new page which contains details about each of the fields in the report.

The Help text for the DON Select page, which is the page where you set the parameters for your report, is still accessed by clicking "Help This Page" in the gold navigation menu.

The DON Report and its accompanying summary reports are all printer friendly pages.  There is no separate link that you need to click in order for them to print without the internet frames.  Simply follow your usual printing procedures and the reports will print out in standard form.

For an example of what one of the summary reports looks like, please see below.  This is an abbreviated version of the summary at the region level.  Summary information regarding Sentinel Events, QI/QMs, and Occurrence Reporting are also included in this report but not shown below.

Just as the facility level DON Report has a button on it to access the Help text, so too do the summary reports.  Click the blue question mark button to see the details of "Help" for your summary reports.  Printing the summary reports is also the same as the facility level report, just follow your standard printing processes as the page is already designed to be printer friendly.

Relieving you of the need to manually retrieve census and clinical information from multiple sources in both CareWatch® and RiskWatch® provides a quick and easy way to compare metrics, saves you time, and improves your overall efficiency--thus allowing you to make the most of your time with your residents.
